Heather Jones (they/them) is an intuitive, embodied, and evocative singing actor, composer, and ensemble singer. Their work has been commissioned by the Spoleto Festival USA, Wild Up Ensemble, City Lyric Opera, and Amanda+James productions, and they’ve been in residence at Oberlin College and Avaloch Music Institute.
In 2025, Heather made their Madison Square Garden debut as a soloist with the Genshin Impact orchestra and sang backup vocals for Louis Cole at his Pioneer Works show in Brooklyn. They also joined Beth Morrison Projects in the world premiere of Paola Prestini’s opera SENSORIUM EX and participated in the N.E.O. voice festival in Los Angeles, CA as a singer and composer. Recent concert engagements include Caroline Shaw’s Partita for 8 Voices with NYC’s Death of Classical, Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater with members of Juilliard 415, Mozart’s Requiem with Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra, and the Brahms Requiem with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Heather regularly collaborates with the LA Master Chorale, Santa Fe Desert Chorale, Apollo’s Fire Ensemble, Voices of Ascension, Musica Sacra, and ChamberQUEER.
Onstage, Heather has gained a reputation for amplifying queer and trans stories in opera, notably in As One, which they’ve performed with Kentucky Opera, Opera Maine, and Holy City Opera. They also recently starred in the world premiere of The Smallest Sound in the Smallest Space by Bryce McClendon at the Clark Theatre in Lincoln Center. The works they’ve written similarly explore themes of body autonomy and queer liberation, including a dance piece for string trio, treble duet, and electronics titled Expostulation(s) of Mary, a cabaret adaptation of Bernstein’s Peter Pan titled Never Land, and their one person show titled ONE BODY about their experience growing up as a closeted queer person in the Episcopal church in the American South. In recent seasons, Heather sang the roles of Nerone in L'incoronazione di Poppea with Intermountain Opera Bozeman, Dido in Dido and Aeneas with the Savannah Voice Festival, Isaac and Magi in a staged dance production of Britten’s Canticles with City Lyric Opera, and Paquette in Candide with Opera Company of Middlebury, for which they were hailed as “a delightful mix of comic and coloratura.” Heather was a 2021 finalist in the American Traditions Vocal Competition and winner of the Sherrill Milnes American Opera Award.
Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Heather grew up surrounded by jazz, bluegrass, gospel, musical theatre, Anglican music, and contra dancing every Friday. After a bachelor’s degree in music education from Westminster Choir College and a master’s degree in vocal performance from Mannes School of Music, they’ve crafted a varied career of opera, ensemble singing, composing for voice and electronics, playwriting, and performance art. Offstage, Heather is a co-host and editor of the Keep Me Young podcast with Blake Jennings and makes handmade stationery and sewn goods. In their off grid life, you can find them riding their custom-built 1988 Bridgestone bike, camping in their converted Ford Transit, visiting vintage clothing stores, or spending time with their cat, Blue Barry.
